Exhibition: Croatian Glagolitic

7 November 2018 - The exhibition "Croatian Glagolitic", set in the lobby of the National and University Library in Zagreb, was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, 6 November 2018 by President of the Republic of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.
“It needs to become not only part of our brand but also our everyday lives. The Glagolitic reflects the turbulent past of our homeland", said the President adding that Croatian culture has enriched European and world heritage.

Minister of Culture Sc.D. Nina Obuljen Koržinek said that the Glagolitic is a value by which we are unique in the world and different from all others, that it is part of our identity and that the works of Croatian culture should be made widely available to the general public.

Adding that „since its very beginnings, Croatian literacy has been characterized by the coexistence and simultaneous use of even three scripts accompanied by the development of two equal literary traditions - the universal Latin one and the autochthonous Glagolitic one“, the Minister underlined that  „the activity of Glagolitic priests has significantly marked Croatian history on a cultural, religious and educational plan“.
„Tonight's exhibition bring us closer to the fundamental goals and postulates of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, which are: to raise awareness of the fact that heritage shapes not only our national identities but also our daily life, to point to the universal values which heritage represents for us as individuals, members of the community and society as a whole and to affirm heritage and caring about it as a foundation of the common European identity and common European future, "said the Minister.

The National and University Library organised the exhibition in the framework of the programme of the European Year of Cultural Heritage under the motto „Let's spell in Glagolitic“/„Slovimo glagoljicom"/.  The exhibition gives an overview of the Glagolitic through the prism of its historical development, typography, cultural influence and contemporary application. The presentation techniques present the matter in several thematic units - from theories about the origin of the Glagolitic, areas of its geographical appearance, through Glagolitic scribes, Glagolitic singing and Glagolitic monuments all the way to a selection of the most valuable manuscript and printed works in Glagolitic script, as well as contemporary use of the Glagolitic in communication, economy, culture and public life.
