Organized by the Department for Research and Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka, the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the ICOMOS Croatian Committee and the Croatian Conservation Institute, the eighth Dialogues with Heritage will be held on 19 and 20 April at the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka and in the Rijeka region (Franciscan monastery at Trsat, Conservation Gallery at the Conservation Department (Užarska ul. 26) and on the Island of Krk (Porat, Malinska, Punat, Košljun).The theme, which this scientific symposium on cultural heritage protection will focus on in the European Year of Cultural Heritage,  will be the experiences in researching, protecting, presenting and valorising the cultural heritage of monastic communities. Not at all unexpected, because, since early medieval Benedictines, monastery culture has had an important role in shaping the European cultural identity. The intention, through presentations on realised and forthcoming conservation interventions and supporting discussions, is to exchange experiences on architectural adaptations, related conservation research and presentation interventions, difficulties related to maintenance of historical edifices designed and built for once much larger monastic communities and adaptations of traditional functions of monastery complexes. Part of the contributions will refer to conservation treatment of the heritage of extinct or abolished monastery communities and of architectural and archaeological heritage. In the field of movable cultural heritage, there will be contributions on conservation inventory of monastery heritage, protection of monastic book heritage, silver and textile items from monastic collections, monastic tradition of collecting and contemporary musealization processes, whether it is about historical monastery inventories or collections realised by donations and monastic activity of collecting.
The field part of the symposium, in cooperation with monastic communities, heads of conservation works and local self-government representatives, will be held in the Franciscan Monastery at Trsat (19 April 2018, afternoon) and on the Island of Krk, in the Franciscan Monasteries in Porat and on Košljun (20 April 2018). The results of conservation researches and implemented protective works, as well as planned future interventions, will be presented. Participating to the symposium will be experts from the Croatian Conservation Institute, the Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Zagreb, Conservation Departments of the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the Department of Culture of the City of Rijeka, the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral and the Institute for Architectural Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Zagreb.

20.00 hours - Conservation Gallery at the Conservation Department, Užarska 26, Rijeka
Opening of the exhibition Landscape in the focus /Krajolik u fokusu/ by author Gordana Jerabek, conservator of the Department for Individual Immovable Heritage, Historical Complexes and Landscape of the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. 
 
20 April - Friday
9. 00 hours – Departure form Jelačić Square in Rijeka to the Island of Krk
Visit to the Franciscan Monastery in Porat with presentation – refreshments organised by the Municipality of Malinska - Dubašnica - Visit to the Franciscan Monastery on Košljun with presentation.
16.00 hours – closing of the symposium with refreshments organised by the Municipality of Punat and the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Punat in the Toš Gallery in Punat
